What Do They Do?
Nina wears many hats at Foresight. One of which is managing the organization's water portfolio, where she drives the adoption of water technology solutions across Canada and beyond. Her days are spent advising startups and identifying where climate solution providers meet real-world problem holders. She strengthens the water tech ecosystem by leading strategic initiatives, partnerships, and programs designed to bring these solutions to scale.
Nina bridges the gap between innovative water tech companies and the industries that need them. In a sector where brilliant technologies commonly stall before reaching full-scale deployment, her role is to drive technologies across the finish line.
Why Does It Matter?
Nina returns to this idea often, and it captures the spirit of her work at Foresight: the problem is not a lack of solutions. The problem is adoption. During our interview she quoted Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson: "We already have all the climate solutions we need. We just need to implement them."
Her role is to close that gap. She is energized by the technologies that have already reached the point of commercial adoption. That momentum, she believes, is what the water tech sector is built on, and it gives her hope even in a difficult geopolitical moment for climate action. Water is where she sees both the greatest urgency and the greatest lag in public awareness, and she is excited to be a solutions catalyst.
How Did They Get There?
Nina completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science at the University of Zurich, with a focus on international relations. Three weeks after graduating, she moved to Vancouver, a city she had fallen in love with during a cross-Canada road trip in 2012.
She started her career in Vancouver at the Swiss-Canadian Chamber of Commerce— a role that turned out to be one of the most formative experiences of her life. Moving to a new country alone meant building a network from scratch, and Nina threw herself into it: attending events, meeting people for coffee without an agenda, joining communities that matched her interests and values. "It was less strategy than necessity fueled by a genuine love for connecting with people," she says, and it became the foundation of everything that followed.
From there, Nina joined the Swiss Consulate as a Science and Technology Officer, a role she held for nearly five years. She organized knowledge exchange programs, bilateral events, and bilateral innovation collaborations between Canada and Switzerland. One of her biggest projects was the Swiss Innovation Fest, a week-long event in Vancouver that brought together Canadian and Swiss institutions, including CERN, Science World, Emily Carr University, and TRIUMF.
During the pandemic, while still at the Consulate, Nina co-organized virtual roundtables with Foresight connecting European and Canadian cleantech leaders on water and built environment. That was her first exposure to the organization, and she was captivated by the work. When she decided she wanted to move from knowledge exchange to hands-on impact, Foresight was at the top of her list.

What do Ecosystem Managers do in Water Technology?
Managers in cleantech ecosystem organizations are connectors at their core. They work across the innovation landscape, with startups, industry partners, investors, government bodies, Indigenous communities and research institutions, to accelerate the development, deployment and adoption of water technology solutions.
Their work involves building programs and initiatives, facilitating partnerships, managing multi-stakeholder projects, and ensuring that innovative technologies reach the people, markets, and communities that need them the most. A large part of the role is relational: listening carefully to understand problems, identifying opportunities for connection, and helping organizations see where their challenges meet available solutions.
Within water technology specifically, this looks like working with companies that are developing real-time monitoring systems, data platforms, water treatment technologies, and other innovations designed to protect and manage water resources more effectively. In practice, it means identifying critical technology gaps for industry leaders, mapping out the local innovation landscape, or hosting matchmaking showcases that put emerging ventures directly in front of decision-makers. It's not just about supporting the ecosystem; it's about building the bridges that take cleantech from proof of concept to widespread practice.
What’s a Typical Pathway?
There is no single pathway into an ecosystem leadership role. People arrive from diverse backgrounds including political science, environmental science, engineering, business, communications, government, nonprofits, consulting, academia, and startups. What unites them isn't their degree or career history, but a genuine curiosity about people, systems, and solutions.
Success in these roles comes from strong relationship-building, systems thinking, and the ability to listen, connect ideas, and help move promising solutions from concept to impact.
Career development is rarely linear. As industries and technologies evolve, professionals continue to build new knowledge through experience, mentorship, professional development, and collaboration. In rapidly changing fields like watershed technology, a willingness to keep learning and adapt is often more important than where you started.
Why Does It Matter?
The water tech sector is doing some of the most important work of our time: identifying, refining, and scaling solutions to climate change while building the economic foundation of a more sustainable future. The challenge is no longer simply inventing new technologies, it's ensuring the best ones are adopted at the scale and speed needed to make an impact.
Water is at the heart of that work in British Columbia and across the country. Healthy watersheds underpin our ecosystems, communities, agriculture, and economy, yet many water challenges remain complex and interconnected. Protecting and strengthening the health and security of watersheds is essential to long-term economic growth, public safety, and resilient communities across B.C. Advances in water technology are improving how we monitor, treat, and manage water resources, helping shift decision-making from reactive to proactive. Many of the solutions already exist. The challenge is helping them reach the people and organizations that can put them into practice. That is why collaboration matters. By bringing together diverse partners around shared challenges, ecosystem builders help accelerate the adoption of solutions that strengthen our communities, economy and our environment.
